Opensky Speed Screen Grabs

The screen shots here and in our manual are genuine. These speeds have been achieved on subscriber-grade Opensky accounts in the UK using a variety of UK ISPs, Windows versions and PC hardware from 500MHz Pentium III up to Athlon 1 GHz and Pentium Mobile.

Data Receivers include Manhattan BSM 2 Ethernet, Manhattan DVB-IP1000 USB, Broadlogic ABA1030 and ABA2030.

Here, the Opensky built-in speedometer is indicating an instantaneous speed of around 1,400kbit/s* (175kbyte/s). Internet Explorer says that the average speed since the beginning of the download (13.8MB so far) is 159kbyte/s or 1,272kbit/s or 1.27Mbit/s. DUmeter (downloadable from www.dumeter.com) shows the gross data throughput is 1.54Mbit/s: about three times faster than domestic ADSL

A 794kbyte file has been downloaded in 14 sec which is, as stated, 56.7kbyte/s or 453kbit/s.

The 1.6Mbyte file was downloaded in 34 sec at an average of 48.6kbyte/s (388kbit/s). The Opensky speedometer recorded a maximum of 1020kbit/s during the download.

You can clearly see the "sawtooth" effect of TCP/IP as the speed rises until it drops packets, falls back and rises again. This is how TCP/IP "finds out" how fast it can go across the network from the webserver to your PC. Opensky says it has peaked at 976kbit/s and an independent test site records 65.6kbyte/s (524kbit/s) instantaneously.

* Here, the speed conventions are "rule of thumb". For a note on speed / filesize conventions, see here.
