How Fast is It?

The system itself connects you to a Broadband (2Mbit/s) "pipe" on our satellite backbone. This is why you will occasionally see higher speeds than domestic ADSL. Overall, the load on our network is managed to give you as close to 500kbs average over the month as possible.

And, of course, while we can control the performance we give you from our connection to the internet backbone, we have no control over what is happening out there on the internet.

The actual speed you see will depend on conditions on the internet, the speed and contention of the server you are accessing as well as conditions on our network and the quality of your phone connection.

  • The satellite transponder carries a number of 2 Mbit/s channels.
  • Channels are given various priorities to manage performance on each channel.
  • Subscribers are connected to a priority channel for their subscription quota.
  • Once their quota is used up, a subscriber is connected to the best-efforts channel.

Even though the "pipe" itself is 2Mbit/s, you should not expect to see this speed. Subscriber performance is managed to deliver an average of 500kbs over the subscription month during your priority quota.

After that, you share the best efforts channel with the other subscribers who have also used up all their monthly priority quota. You may be lucky: if the system is quiet, you can get high speeds on best-efforts. It's just that we do not offer any QoS targets for best-efforts.

Your performance is also affected by your own PC, firewall, virus-checker, operating system and phone connection as well as ever other variable which happens to be affecting the internet and the website you are connecting to.
