Opensky - More Detail

OPENSKY™ - Not just Broadband wherever you are

Along with OPENSKY™, there are a range of technologies which offer broadband.High-priced solutions such as leased lines are out of the reach of most of us. ISDN is readily available; ADSL, BFWA and Cable Modems are available in some areas and other technologies are promised at some future time. We offer the two-way via satellite service, D-STAR. These services all have their own balance of cost, service level and geographical availability.

OPENSKY™ has a number of unique features which make it the right broadband technology for millions of UK homes and users. We hope it's right for you.

  • Near 100% coverage in the UK for Broadband Internet
  • Keep your existing ISP, e-mail, website etc
  • No extra telco installation required
  • Broadband video streams
  • Content forwarded to your desktop

1. Almost no geographical limitations

You can receive OPENSKY™ wherever you can install a small satellite dish. You will also need an internet access method - say through your existing phone line. Most homes can have a suitable dish installed without needing to apply for planning permission. You can even receive Opensky and Sky TV on the same dish. Your installing dealer will be able to give specific advice.

2. No change needed to your existing internet access method

OPENSKY™ acts as an overlay to your existing access method. You do not need to change your ISP, e-mail address, web-hosting or other specialist arrangements. Simply continue with your current ISP and add Opensky broadband browsing and multicast content capability.

3. No extra telephone installation

Other broadband methods require either a new phone line or an upgrade to your telco installation - perhaps even a change of telecom provider. OPENSKY™ avoids this as you can use your existing phone line. And if you find you are getting so much out of the internet that you want to install a dedicated line to access OPENSKY™, you can choose whatever telco deal you like from any provider.

4. Off-line (no phone line) video streams: SatTV

OPENSKY™ blends satellite broadcast with internet video. Any number of users can select any of the offered video streams without any reduction of quality. If the stream is broadcast at 512kbps full frame, every user receives the same quality - even if millions want the same content. You can receive any of the streams without being online - in fact, you can receive and watch multiple streams simultaneously, as long as your PC has enough processing power. Only satellite can deliver this.

5. Off-line content delivery: SatKiosk

Just like video IP streams, internet content can also be broadcast without you having to be online. The OPENSKY™ client allows you to navigate the broadcast choice - web-pages, entire web-sites, files and software - and select which content you would like to be stored in your local cache on your PC. When received, it's then immediately available to you for off-line browsing without having to use - or pay for - the phone.

Protocols via Opensky

The system can deliver HTTP, HTTPS (SSL), FTP and SOCKS protocols during an interactive session. The development roadmap includes other common protocols.

For video and audio, we use MPEG-4 streams receivable by Windows Media Player.

All these protocols are encapsulated within the DVB MPEG-2 Transport Stream at the satellite uplink. This TS is received by your DVB-IP device when the IP packets are decapsulated, reassembled and sent to the bus to be dealt with by software such as your browser, media player or cache client.

SatSurf Broadband Internet Access

As with terrestrial internet backbone, it is not usual that an individual would need - or wish to pay for! - a completely uncontended leased line dedicated solely to them on a full-time 24 x 7 basis. Sharing the network allows high-quality performance to users as and when they are online - so the costs can be shared amongst a much wider user base.

The entry level is BDSL 300 which gives:

  • peak (burst) performance four times as fast as consumer ADSL
  • over 1Mbit/s peak vs 512kbit/s peak
  • average six times better than ISDN
  • 500kbit/s average vs 64kbit/s max
  • contention ratio equivalent to ADSL
  • Satellite direct connection to backbone equivalent to 50:1

This is available to UK customers today for £19.99 (inc VAT) per month.

SatTV Connectionless Offline Video Streams

These are MPEG-4 IP video streams which are passed by the Opensky Client to your media player such as Windows Media Player. The Opensky Client means you can simply click and view without having to go online via your internet connection.

SatKiosk Connectionless Offline Push Services

SatKiosk sends you files over the satellite conenction for storage on your hard drive. These files can be webpages, videos, games, anything. You do not have to be online via your internet connection to receive these files. Just select them in the SatKiosk Guide and leave your receive device and PC on. They are stored on your PC the next time they are transmitted.

There is one subscription service: Reuters. All the others are currently free. There will be more added value subscription services in the future
