VPN Login Issues

Update 6 April 2005

Network have announced a change to the configuration on the pptp connection: this is more stable and it is working properly.

There are occasional issues on the l2tp connection.

The new servers have not yet been installed by network but they say they "are working on it". We will keep you informed through this page.

If you do notice service problems with your VPN Login (either via OSDA or BSM2) please let us know your login and the time/date and nature of the problem via this link.

Affected Users

We have had reports from some users of not being able to login using VPN. This may apply if

  • you use the Opensky Client in VPN (OSDA) mode
  • you are using the BSM2
Symptoms

You can make a successful connection to the internet but are unable to make a VPN connection to the satellite service (or the VPN connection is immediately dropped).

Cause

The VPN Server cluster at the hub can occasionally get overloaded and refuse to allow or maintain any new VPN connections.

Solution

A new pair of high-power servers has been delivered to the network and is being installed to cure this problem. Until this is complete, please use the following Work-Round.

Work-Round

1) Wait a few minutes and try again.

2) If you are using the BSM2, please untick the Enable VPN box. This will allow you to access the internet by dial-up. You can also use a manual SatLogin and set your browser proxy. Explanation here.

3) If you are using the Opensky Client, please use "normal" OS access mode or manual SatLogin / proxy method. Explanation here.

Remember if you switch from VPN (OSDA) to Manual or normal OS access, you need to switch your email servers. Explanation here.

We apologise for the inconvenience and will post any comment from network as soon as we have a resolution.
