How to Take a Screen Grab

From time to time, we may ask you to take a "screen grab" or "screen print". This is so we can see what's on your screen in order to help troubleshoot a technical issue or see the results of a speed test. If you already have a screen capture application, then you probably already know how to do this. If not, you can always use the one built-in to Windows. The instructions may vary depending on which Windows version you have so it's best to consult your Windows Help for precise details.

As a summary, to take a screen grab:

  1. Open your preferred image application (eg Paint or Paint Shop Pro or whatever) or any application into which you can paste an image / insert a picture (eg Word).
  2. Go to the screen you want to take a picture of. This could be the entire desktop or just one browser page - it's doesn't matter how you do it, just make sure you can see on your screen the thing you want to take a picture of.
  3. Press the "Print Screen" button on your keyboard (might say "Prnt Scrn" or "Print" or something similar). This copies whatever is on your screen to the Clipboard.
  4. Go to the application you want to use.
  5. Paste the image into the application. Method varies by application but is usually under Edit > Paste or you can Right Click on your mouse which should bring up a menu with Paste as an option.
  6. Save the file and attach it to the email.

Speed Tests

There are many forms of speed tests out there and they vary in results widely. The location of the test server makes a huge difference as does whether or not it is optimised for the very asymmetric nature of satellite hybrid services.

Therefore, if you have any speed issues or have been asked to do a speed test, please use the download files on this site. This is the only way we can interpret the results.

  1. Go to our download page
  2. Choose a file somwehere between 100 kilobytes and 1 Megabyte (smaller then 100kB may not give enough time for the system to reach speed and larger then 1 MB may get boring especially if there are problems).
  3. Right-click on the link to the pdf you have chosen in the column headed "link".
  4. Save the file somwhere convenient to you
  5. During (or at the end of) the download, do a Screen Grab
  6. Send us the results. It should look something like this:

In this example, it's showing 66.4 kilobytes per second which to convert to kilobits per second (approximately) needs mutliplying by 8 to give 531 kilobits per second (1 byte = 8 bits).
