Sir Arthur C. Clarke first published the concept of geostationary communications satellites in 1945. Today, the use of such satellites has launched the world into a new communications era.
Communications satellites really started to hit the public consciousness with the advent of satellite TV. There are over a hundred million homes in Europe receiving TV from satellites.
The first ever internet link to the UK was via satellite. But it has taken the development of the DVB standard to make consumer broadband internet via satellite affordable and widely available.
First demonstrated by Eutelsat in 1995 and in the UK by projects with BeyonDSL team members since 1998, IP over DVB is now available from BeyonDSL throughout the UK.
