Why Use Satellite for the Internet?

Slow speed is the main concern for users and content providers alike. Without broadband access, the internet experience will remain slow, jerky and unsatisfying. To make the internet a slick and enjoyable multimedia experience, download speeds will have to increase radically.

And there's a problem. Geography. It's easy enough to get broadband in cities but what happens if your house is one of the 50% of the UK outside a cable franchise? Or if it's too far away from the exchange for ADSL?

And that, of course, is even if they have enough capacity in the exchange or enough local demand to upgrade it.

Don't panic. (a massively useful phrase - thanks, DNA)

There is a technology which can deliver broadband wherever you are. IP/DVB via Satellite: available today as the OPENSKY™ service from BeyonDSL.

It is:

Fast

  • up to 40 Megabits per second with possible expansion.

Available

  • receivable throughout Europe now.
  • can be installed in a matter of days.

Open

  • open, agreed standard / transparent to TCP/IP.

Compatible

  • little or no change to ISP infrastructure.
  • no change to Content Providers require
  • no phone line upgrade require
  • no change in existing access arrangements
  • no change in existing browser set-up

Affordable

  • for user and provider alike. A standard DVB multiplex is used which co-exists with the European standard digital TV and radio - allowing users to receive both internet and digital TV on the same technology platform.

It is an asymmetric data delivery system: low bandwidth from the user to ISP and high bandwidth from ISP to user. This matches extremely well the asymmetric nature of the vast majority of internet use: a few kilobits sent and many megabits received. The infrastructure and operating costs are concentrated on where they are most needed - it is cost effective for ISP's and users as well as being fast and efficient.
